    Performance Driver Characterization for Unconventional Assets

    Problem Statement:

    To gain competitive advantage, a large independent decided to identify the performance drivers in its unconventional asset in the DJ basin. The complexity of the operation that included large number of laterals with massive, multi-stage hydraulic fractures minimized the applicability of analytical, numerical and even traditional statistical analysis. Upon successful completion of this study the approach was implemented in other assets such as Eagle Ford Shale.

    Shale Production Optimization Technology (SPOT)

    Problem Statement:

    Large number of wells are being completed in Shale assets in several locations throughout the United States. Realizing that the "One Size Fit All" prescription cannot possibly be the right way to continue completion operation, the operator was interested in taking full advantage of the existing data generated from large number of wells that had already been completed. The operator selected to use the field measurements in order to develop and validate a data driven predictive model for the completion operation in its shale asset. The predictive model should be able to assist the operator in optimizing production by identifying best hydraulic fracturing practices in the asset.

    Increasing Oil Production and Recovery from a Giant Oilfield in The Middle East

    Problem Statement:

    To increase production from the field, it was decided to relax rate restrictions on wells in a giant oil filed. Since water was being injected in parts of the field for pressure maintenance, and since water production was becoming an issue for several wells, not all wells would be a good candidate for rate relaxation. The NOC needed to know which wells should be selected for rate relaxation and which wells should not.

    Building & Validating a Data Driven Reservoir Model in D.J. Basin, Using the TDM Technology

    Problem Statement:

    Building a reservoir model, using the traditional simulation and modeling techniques, is impractical in many cases. Lack of expert manpower, capital or most importantly data can contribute to this impracticality. The objective is to build a reservoir model that can be validated for accuracy, and be used to identify the most appropriate locations in the field for infill drilling.

    In the Top-Down, Intelligent Reservoir Modeling the reservoir model is built and then validated using the measured data such as production data and well logs as the starting point. In this project a top-down model was developed and validated for the Wattenberg field producing from Codell and Niobrara formations in the D.J. Basin.

    Re-Stimulation Candidate Selection in Three U.S. Basins

    Problem Statement:

    There is a significant potential for natural gas production enhancement via restimulation. In 1998 Gas Research Institute sponsored a research program to identify the most appropriate methodology for "Restimulation" candidate selection in tight sands. A team of five companies were involved in the project. The best methodology would have to prove its effectiveness in a controlled environment (Reservoir Simulation) as well as in the field in three basins in the US.

    Modeling Surface Facilities in Prudhoe Bay for Oil Production Optimization

    Problem Statement:

    Prudhoe Bay has approximately 800 producing wells flowing to eight remote, three-phase separation facilities (flow stations and gathering centers). High-pressure gas is discharged from these facilities into a cross–country pipeline system flowing to a central compression plant. The objective of this study was to develop a tool to assist engineers in maximizing total field oil production by optimizing the gas discharge rates and pressures at the separation facilities.
